Subject: Was that fun or what?

Hey David,

Had a wonderful time last night with your Broken Angels. (Let's get this right out front: As a longtime Hunter/Stella freak, I am pissed that you have swiped this name! It is a wonderful choice, epitimizing Jerry, and all of us, and I am jealous as shit that you got it first. ;)

It's funny. I came at the last minute, with no plan at all of doing so. Emergency times on my personal front--the cow is giving kerosene on good days right now, and I needed to let loose a little. Only problem is, something about the room seems to prohibit dancing, why I don't know. I came by once before, when you had Henry Kaiser up there, and couldn't believe the folks were just sitting there. I left shortly thereafter, bummed. Well, last night, I was determined to dance, so I did what I could. It wasn't quite the Pasand or Fillmore level of reckless abandon, but I really did enjoy myself. I'm gonna come back and work to whip it up some more next week. (any way to clear out some of those tables and chairs to free up some space? Most of the front tables seem to be empty anyway, with people tending toward the back.) I have to imagine it's more fun for you guys to have us shaking it, as opposed to staring at you.

I thought the Ginsberg eulogy to Neal was a deft touch, and you guys did some neat stuff behind it with the varying dynamics and moods. Were there more room, I'd have gone to the zone big time. Reminded me of 10-31-91 in a way. In a way. It would have been a no-brainer to go with Howl, so I thought this worked out quite nicely. Kudos.

Another thing that felt really good was your tampering with stuff, ala the speedway vocalizing at the end and that interspercing of bobby's china cat opening riff in the neat little spaces. It's odd. when it is happening, I am hyper aware of what is going down, but unless I see a set list later, I remember only a few tunes that were played. Did you guys do a franklins? I thought I remembered you putting that china cat riff in there, but I can't really remember the franklins. I know you tossed it in the gdtrfb, just as they did a time or two, but you also did it elsewhere. I think this element of juxtapostion puts a great spin on things and keeps the music viable and growing. Hunter's bits at the fillmore doing this (Bertha/Help! and Down the Road/So Many Roads, to name two) were transcendent., but I am a stone Hunter fool, so what do I know? ;) It always occurs to me how much the dead created a new genre out of their mixture of traditional styles. It's a whole different breed of music and it is just starting. As I told Duane, this shit did not die with the Dead.

I liked dancing with your stuff a lot. I hadn't heard you play but for the ten minutes with Kaiser, so it was a treat to hear some of the spaces you painted yourself into. I also didn't mind the frequent clams, ala Terrapin. I know you guys don't rehearse much, so I like the ragged but right spirit. (At times, however, there were some egregious tuning problems. How nostalgic! ;) I like to ride with the melody as opposed to just bouncing along with a pedestrian rhythm, so it was nice to take those journeys with you. I'd like to take that ride again.

see ya soon,
Fred

[Phil Coulson's birthday]

Jay asked me for some comments, so here's a few:

I thought this show was really good, overall. The second set was especially nice. I think the harp really added the right touch to Next Time, and the band seemed to gel from then on out. The highlights for me were the jams: between Scarlet and Rider; after Terrapin; and out of The Other One. Some of it made my hair stand up! I'll have to give it another listen on tape -- but I'm pretty sure it wasn't just me. . .

Phil C. was really on last night -- there's something about them birthday shows. . .

See ya next time,
Michael Zelner

Two years to the day after the last Mardi-Gras I found myself sitting in
the basement of Larry Blakes Bar on Telegraph Ave in our fair city of
Berkeley being bombarded with some of the strangest music I have ever
heard.

As Gans said himself, it was too out there to be bad or good. Man it
was weird. I enjoyed it entirely.

For those of you in the Bay Area I suggest you get your lazy butts to
Blakes on Tuesday night. It's always fun.... It's only three bucks so
come on down. Taping is allowed and encouraged.

When Duane Day jammed with the Broken Angels at Blake's on February 18, I suggested Scarlet Begonias->Terrapin. Duane didn't think it was feasible to go from a Scarlet jam (in B) to Terrapin (which starts with an F chord).

We all know now that is *is* possible. And fun, too. &endash; DG

Dear David,

I was going to follow your advice and make up descriptive names for
the jams but after reading the track listing for the Dick's Picks #7
(from the March 1997 ICE newsletter), I couldn't begin to match
"Spam Jam".

If you live in the SF area, check out David Gans' band 'Broken Angels'
- they play Larry Blakes in Berkeley each tuesday evening, charge only
3$... Great evening ... we missed the start and end, but enjoyed all
we saw ... Band was great, tight with good jams - the guy who stood in
for Bertha ... dunno where he came from but I suggest you San
Franciscans keep an eye on him... and a good time was had by all -
there weren't that many there, so check it out - you missed a good
night out.

David and company are doing a really fun thing in Berkeley every
Tuesday. Berkeley, on the other hand, must be riding the pendulum
according to the whims of, like, some OTHER gravity, man. A bar
full of people surrounded by tapes of Dead tunes and real live
covers thereof *sat down* through the whole thing. Lisa and I
were SO confused, I mean, we had good cause to sit and chat with
Jeremy and his brother John, but both us us got up to boogie a
couple of times! There were maybe three other people in the whole
bar who so much as wobbled a hip.

We arrived on the tail end of an Eyes... then sat through a really
nice Scarlet -> Terrapin -> the beginning of a Wharfie before the
encroaching wee-bitching hour heralded our untimely departure. The
Mssrs. Gans and Nakamine look to be having a grand time (and who
wouldn't?), and neither is afraid to take chances during the jams;
bravo! It's good stuff. I was *very* impressed with guest Duane
Day's bass playing; his tone and agility is spot on. At the
beginning of the second set, David brought a very fresh-faced
young fellow named Blake Shaeffer (?) up on stage, then proceeded
to let him have the solos and sing the final verse to Bertha. My
only complaint about his playing would be that he lacked the
confidence to turn it up a notch and really step out. What I
could hear in the mix, though, was pretty solid. I thought it
was a great thing to do, exceedingly kind on the band's part, not
to mention that they backed him up superbly, urging perhaps a
longer lead break than Mr. Shaeffer expected, then supporting
him through it and out. It's a warm making thing, you know?

peace,
paul
